   it is illegal to copy the Form I-551 (commonly known as the GC), I
   had to send my original GC to the INS office at Dallas.

This law has changed in the past couple of years -- you can copy your
green card and other documents, if you send along a some sort of
statement and can produce the originals in person.

This info (plus the text of the statement) is included on an
unnumbered form I got from the INS when I got the forms for a
replacement green card.
